In 1941, Frank G. Speck published associations of 73 native plants and their medical folklore: Transcript
Primitive Man XIV 4 4973 In an effort to substantiate the reported medical usefulness of these plants we undertook an associative study of Houma medical folklore with genus and speciesspecific bioactive phytochemicals known to modern science We transcribed data on plants and associated historical medical applications as reported by Speck 1941 into a sortable spreadsheet using MS Excel To these data we curated information abstracted from scientific and historical literature pertaining to experimentally confirmed bioactivity derived from tissues of species in our database To date our curation has revealed substantiation of bioactivity in 11 Houma curative plant groups Many of the chemical extracts derived from tissues of these plants are complex resonant organic molecules demonstrating broad antiinflammatory properties Importantly to this project those antiinflammatory properties are consistent with application of crude plant preparations by the historical Houma These findings demonstrate that the medical usefulness of at least some plants from indigenous Houma folklore as reported by Speck represent true and useful pharmacological applications In an era of drugresistance and high costs of pharmaceutical development retroactive investigations of historical curatives for their mechanism of action may provide a new avenue of drug discovery In addition our findings suggest that the historical Houma or their ancestors conducted meaningful pharmacological evaluations that resulted in functional medical applications derived from environmental resources. www.folklore.ee/folklore/vol21ates is different.
