(BOOK)-The Most Dangerous Animal: Transcript

Almost 200 million human beings mostly civilians have died in wars over the last century and there is no end of slaughter in sightThe Most Dangerous Animal asks what it is about human nature that makes it possible for human beings to regularly slaughter their own kind It tells the story of why all human beings have the potential to be hideously cruel and destructive to one another Why are we our own worst enemy The book shows us that war has been with usin one form or anothersince prehistoric times and looking at the behavior of our close relatives the chimpanzees it argues that a penchant for group violence has been bred into us over millions of years of biological evolution The Most Dangerous Animal takes the reader on a journey through evolution history anthropology and psychology showing how and why the human mind has a dual nature on the one hand we are ferocious dangerous animals who regularly commit terrible atrocities against our own kind on the other we have a deep aversion to killing a horror of taking human life Meticulously researched and farreaching in scope and with examples taken from ancient and modern history The Most Dangerous Animal delivers a sobering lesson for an increasingly dangerous world. The change in the way we cohabitate with animals can be seen in the way we treat them when they die. There is an almost infinite variety of ways to help us cope with the loss of our nonhuman friends—from burial, cremation, and taxidermy to wearing or displaying the remains (ashes, fur, or other parts) of our deceased animals in jewelry, tattoos, or other artwork to counselors who specialize in helping people mourn pets to classes for veterinarians to tips to help the surviving animals who are grieving their animal friends to pet psychics and memorial websites. But the reality is that these practices, and related beliefs about animal souls or animal afterlife, generally only extend, with very few exceptions, to certain kinds of animals—pets. Most animals, in most cultures, are not mourned, and the question of an animal afterlife is not contemplated at all. Mourning Animals investigates how we mourn animal deaths, which animals are grievable, and what the implications are for all animals.   Animal Eyes provides a comparative account of all known types of eye in the animal kingdom, outlining their structure and function with an emphasis on the nature of the optical systems and the physical principles involved in image formation. A universal theme throughout the book is theevolution and taxonomic distribution of each type of eye, and the roles of different eye types in the behaviour and ecology of the animals that possess them. In comparing the specific capabilities of eyes, it considers the factors that lead to good resolution of detail and the ability to functionunder a wide range of light conditions. This new edition is fully updated throughout, incorporating more than a decade of new discoveries and research.
